It’s the tail end of winter we are still getting cold snaps and Florida anglers are itching for the spring to get here. After the freeze of mid January the fishing has slowed a bit. Fishing this week it seems that the redfish have broken up with plenty of singles and pairs feeding and tailing on the flats. I usually look forward to February as historically it has been an outstanding month for my clients, the highlight trip being a day where we boated 48 redfish in a morning. Unfortunately this February has been off to a slower start. The wind has been blowing from the north pushing plenty of water to the south end of the lagoon. There are some good schools of Black Drum in the Indian River and Middle Lagoon and a soaked half crab or shrimp combined with a bit of patience will do the trick. Redfish have been spotty at best with many sitting on the edges of clumped grass. Finding a shoal or flat with exposed grass clumps will be a great place to look. The majority of the redfish we found were sitting on the leeward side of the grass. The weather and wind is still crummy so if possible hit the water during those windows of good weather and, Get Your Fish On…Florida Fisherman Style!
