May 2010 Mosquito Lagoon Report
The Mosquito Lagoon is back and better than ever. The last month the amount of bait has increased significantly. Huge pods of glass minnows can be found cruising around the edges of the flats in the Mosquito Lagoon. The trout and lady fish bites have been great working soft plastics such as the new Trick Fisch by Castalia Outdoors around these schools. Look for bait pods rippling on top of the water (looks like rain) this usually means game fish are around the school causing them to "Ball Up" on the surface for safety. There are also schools of mullet and pilchards scattered throughout the River system. Find areas of mullet muds, which are areas of cloudy water caused by the actions of many mullet zipping around the area. These areas will hold trout, redfish, black drum, and even snook. These predators are feeding on smaller baitfish that are disoriented in all the commotion. Gulp Jerk shad in new penny and Assasin shrimp has worked well in these areas.
The estuaries are red-hot and will offer multiple shots on fish during the day so get out there and "Get Your Fish On... Florida Fisherman Style."
